Every Beta has its tape compartment components mounted on a single solid frame similar to the one seen on the left. This is from a late model Sony and it is fabricated using strong stamped metal. Bonded to it are the plastic fittings, bosses, uprights and pins. Screw holes are also machined into the surface. It is shown as a ghost image over the reel block that is mounted under it. You will be able to come back to this discussion. Frame designs changed slightly through the years, and some other manufacturers used a rigid fiber-impregnated composition plastic material. We will see this type later on. But the purpose is the same, to serve as the rigid platform on which all the necessary components as securely mounted. One big one is the pancake pendulum reel motor assembly or block seen on the right. This subassembly block design was adopted early on to simplify manufacture and repair. The reel block always receives special attention because it is crucial to the smooth handling of the tape for which Beta is famous. It has several areas that can require adjustment, restoration or correction.
