An oscilloscope is an indispensable tool for measuring and testing voltages and patterns. Click on the picture and you see a Betamax being tested while playing the standard NTSC color bar test pattern. It is shown on the monitor on the left. On the right this pattern is shown on the scope in what is called the stair step test pattern. Each color or step in this pattern is measured against the USA NTSC 3.58 engineering standard. Seeing color accurately can vary from one person to another, the scope eliminates any chance of human error or misinterpretation. The color reproduction must be accurate with clarity and crispness. The Betamax must be capable of turning the light and dark areas off and on without outlines. All of this is indicated by certain measuring points on the screen of the scope. If everything looks good then the VCR is ready for further tests.
